Page 6_____________PIONEER___________December 11, 1943 ZEPHYRS TOPPLE ROCKY FORD, STRONG SINGLE A CONTENDER The high-scoring Zephyrs, potential class A champs clad in their bright fire- men suits, blazed away i n the last quarter to romp home with the 42-28 win over the visiting Rocky Ford- Hawley quintet Thursday night at the local gym. The confident Zephyrs loafed thru the first half and held a scant 22-20 mar- gin at the hallway station. At the end of the first can- to they were trailing12 to 9. Up to the fourth quarter the tussle had possibilities for a close, bang-up ending with Rocky Ford-Hawley’s speed-demon Tom Nakayama firing away for 12 points. But the red-clad lads had too much final-stretch drive for the fast tiring visi- tors. Shinzi Saito, Sats Uye- kubo and Jack Hamahashi were home point-getter s with 9, 3, and 8 markers respectively. TERUKO MIYANO'S 21 POINTS PACES SPURS TO 32-25 WIN The Spurs, featuring Flossy Teruko Miyano’s 21- Point rampage, outlasted the favored Toppers to wrap up a 32-25 victory in the first girls hoop match of the season last Thursday evening. It was a thrilling af- fair in a girls-game way with Topper’s diminutive Sadayo Washino flitting around matching Miyano bucket -for-bucket all the way for three successive quarters. Scores at the end of the first three can- tos stood at 8-4, 17-12 and 22-20 with the Surs hold- ing upper hand. Four field goals by Miyano in the final stanza told the tale as midget Wahino could tally but two charity tosses- no Wahino, no Toppers. Both sextets were off The beam and played a “prac- tice” brand of basketball, which means that the res- pective coaches will have to do plenty of polishing- up if they are to seriously contend for the crown. Washino's 16 digits easily topped Toppers’ scor- ing column. Summary: TOPPERS 25 Washino 16, Wallace 1, Ueda 4, B. Kochi, Ota 4, Y. Kochi, Miyamoto, I.Umekubo and D. Umekubo.
