SPORTS PIONEER December 11, 1943_____________Amache, Colo._______________Page 5 Johnnie Presents by tsuruta MANPOWER SHORTAGE Our good (? )ol' friend -"manpower shortage "--has hit our center decisively. A good proof of this can be seen by just looking thru the list of teams en- tered in the various rec- reation boys league. Last season we had six "AA" quintets fighting for the highest project basket- ball crown, while the sin- gle A division had an even dozen teams chasing the flag. This season things are different, radically so. There are only three quintets in the upper bra- cket and seven in the "junior- varsity" ring. And at that, most of the teams are hav- ing a hard time filling their roster of ten players, while last season the limit was 15 and most of 'em had at least 12 cagers on"con- tract. " This shortage can be ac- counted for by two factors: first, that high school students are ineligible to play in rec leagues and, secondly, the relocation of many of last season’s bright stars, especially in the AA class. To offset this "famine" in the double A league, we can offer a suggestion that may put more life into the upper circuit--elevate coup- le of single A teams. We believe this to be rec's duty. If the managers want to express their" two cents" worth as which team should be elevated, why not call a meeting and come to some kind of an agreement. But quick. After all, only three teams, mind you, only three in the AA league. Man alive, that’s puhlenty sad! WHAT CHU KNOW! It took a feminine net swisher to break Menda's four-day old individual 20- point scoring record. Teruko Miyano of the Spurs dethroned the Yoore sharpshooter with her one- hand snots hitting the twine man deadly accuracy. Teruko tallied 21 digits to top all scorers. LAS ANIMAS FIVE TO TANGLE WITH 8 BALL QUINT SUNDAY FEATURE GAME The Las Animas basket- brigade will try for their second victory over a cen- ter quintet on the local court when they tackle the veteran Eight-Ball (former Fukuyamas) cagers tomorrow afternoon in the feature contest. Smooth functioning Ani- mas boys will rely on their frontal attack of Nob Ku- watani, Ted Maruyama and Elmo Sakai to produce enough digits to carry them thru. This trio was good for 31 points against the Duster. Whether this offensive threat can outweigh their lack well-coordinated de- fense will be the question. The answer will depend on what the Eight-Ball can put up as their scoring punch. The veteran cagers have- n’t as yet shown their real offensive power and are known as the first-half team. Lanky Tom Yokoi and husky Yorio Aoki are expected to share the point-making bur- den for the home clan. STARS-RAMBLERETTES Captain Mary Wada and her Delta Shooting Stars and the rambling Rambler- ettes, undisputed “queens of the divided-court” last season, will square-off in what is expected to be a fast-and-furious thriller in the first of afternoon's three-game card. The Shoot- ing Stars are the holders of the Merced AC champion- ship, while the Rambler- ettes gained their repu- tation in the Amache cir- cuit. Tip-off is slated for 1 o’clock. Coach Flu Inaba will most likely form the nucle- ous of Stars’ attack around ambidextrous Nami Kinoshi- ta and Shiz Nagoshi, who works equally well at the guard post. Cowl Takao will be in the chief supporting role. Others to see plenty of action for the Deltans are Momoyo Kinoshita, Anne and Yuri Yamamoto,Kimi Ya- gi, Reiko Shimada, Rose Matsuoka and Jean Sueoka. S p e ed y Ramblerettes, under Coach Al Kato’s watch- ful eyes, are no less bril- iant with an array of sparkling casaba tossers. Kato's roster is as follows: be the question. Holly Onemiya, Eva, Norma and Anna Sugiyama, Helen Kato, Norma Hamamoto, Mary Yokoyama, Joyce Ikesaki, Alice Yatabe, Janet Kubochi and Mieko Akutagawa. BRONCOS VS FIREMEN The second contest will pit the Broncos against the firemen, both single A league entrants. Nothing much is known about their respective strength but the Broncos look like the favorites with peerless George Hamamoto, last season's "A" all-star and scoring king, leading the offensive attack. Broncos' roster:Joe Ya- tabe,Aki Aburano, Mayo Ha- saoka, Jack Ito, Joe Nori- kane, Jim Otsuki, George Hamamoto, Hiromi Sato, and John Kawata. Firemen's squad: Sabu Ya - mamoto,Georqe Matsui, Fred Kajioka, Tsutomo Sugiura, Dix Asai, Sumito Nabeta, Jim Furukawa,Ben Shimomura, Nebb Oda and Emerick Ishi- Kawa.
