PIONEER Sports Page 6______________________November 24, 1943 Johnnie Presents by tsuruta FAN SHAPE STYLE We’re going to have a fan-shape-type backboard on our long regulation court at the high school gym. According to coach Hoke this is a new 1943-44 reg- ulation and all high schools and colleges are adopting this change and so are we . This ruling has been in effect for several seasons but until this season it had been optional. There are many pros and cons to this change , as expected when any innova- tion comes up, but we want new style, don't we ? Let' s not have a n y "squaks" about it. Might as well take it like a man, it’s even-steven for all concerned. ANOTHER CHANGE Another near change in our high gym will find the goals set four feet in from the end lines instead of two feet as was custom- ary during previous seasons. This added space will give the frame a wide-open attack somewhat like ice hockey. It will make no appreciable diff erence in the forecourt but that extra two feet behind the back- board may give the fans some new wrinkles on basket- ball manipulation. One thing sure--Industrial leaguers will be glad to know the playing floor has been squeezed another four feet. SMALLEST TACKLE There are many nisei cavorting for various col- lege elevens this season but we've uncovered a sprite - ly lad playing for the Fort Sheridan service team that merits especial mention. He is Taruo Akinaga, formerly of Hayward, Calif. Akinaga is only 5-3½ straight up, even on a hot day, and tips the scale at “hefty” 152. But the oddest thing about Teruo is that he is holding of all posts, tack- le position, where beef is the primary requisite. According to the Chicago Tribune, his team-mates have nicknamed him “Bull” for his crushing blocks. What a guy! 19 CAGE SQUADS BEGIN PRACTICE EACH TEAM GETS 45 MINUTES On again-off again rec- reation leagues' practice sessions at the high school gym have been definitely set for tonight with the girls' teams taking the floor at 6:30 o'clock sharp stated Athletic Director Harry Shironaka Monday aft- ernoon. Due to misunderstanding and last minute complica- tion practices were not held last Wednesday but all managers are assured that there will be no change this time. In order to get some semblance of order during tonight's practice jamboree various managers and players are requested to fellow these regulations: 1--Only member of teams, their managers and coaches slated to practice at the designated time will be permitted to enter the gym- nasium. Teams not concerned for that certain period are ask- ed to await their turn, in other words make arrange- ments to arrive just a few minutes before their ap- pointed time. 2--All players must wear adequate gym shoes, no ex- ceptions. 3--Teams must appear on time and relinquish the floor immediately when their allotted time is up.
