November 20, 1943_____________________PIONEER______________________Page 3 NISEI HARVEST TULE LAKE PRODUCE AT CURRENT WAGES HEART MOUNTAIN Wyo.,Nov. 17.-Japanese-American work- ers, recruited from other relocation camps after in- ternees at the Tule Lake, Calif. camp refused to work. are earning over $70 week. This was disclosed Tues- day in a report to the WRA Camp newspaper at Heart Moun- tain. The paper said there 237 volunteer workers from four inland WRA camps at the Tule Lake project and that they were putting in an average of better than ten hours per day harvest- ing cabbage, carrot, grain and potatoes. Meanwhile, WRA officials announced the start of a new relocation program de- signed to speed evacuees throughout the nation, ex- cept on the west coast. EVACUEES MUST FIND PLACE IN U.S. LIFE In a formal statement, WRA officials said: “Since relocation is the primary objective of the WRA, it is important that we have a common un- derstanding of the basic assumptions on which the relocation policy is based. These are: “1-Evacuees must ulti- mately find their place in American society and not in The relocation c enters, Which are temporary homes, "2--Resettlement in the near future is desirable for the evacuees and the nation because it is the most effective means of re-establishing civil rights “3- Relocation is a vi- tal contribution to the solution of the nation's urgent manpower problem. "4--Continued - life in relocation center is under- mining the independence of a vigorous and self-reliant people, and this independ- dence can be preserved only thru their efforts to re- establish themselves in the life of American communities. “5-The assimilation of Americans of Japanese an- cestry and the solution of their problems can be aided by the education of the American public thru first- hand contact.” ____________KEEP AMACHE CLEAN_____________ WOODWORK CLASSES BUILD BABY BEDS The high school wood- work classes have construct- ed 25 baby beds for the center hospital, and are in the process of building 75 more. Those elected as members of the board of directors were Shinshichi Fujino, I- wazo Hanamoto,James J. Hi- kido, Akira Inaba, Matsu- shi Naruse, Tomotaro Nishi- zakui, Seizo Usui, Koshiro Umekubo and Tamasaburo Yu- zawa. Elections returns found Clarence Arima, Norman M. Kishi and Mack H. Saito as members of the auditing Committee, while Toyoji Kon- no, Tatsuhiko Miyamoto and Kenjiro Nozawa were elected as the membership committee.
