.November 17, 1943______________PIONEER________________Page 5 NISEI POTPOURRI by Roy Yoshida AS I SEE IT. GIRLS are definitely in the minority at any stag- stagette shindig-from here to Timbuctoo. And dances at such an affair are prac- tically all "tags''. And the stags will keep crowding the floor once the dance gets rolling. No stag wants to get "aced out"on some of the popular femmes. That's the peren- nial headache of any S-S m.c. He asks the boys to step back, then he pleads and finally is forced to use stronger words. These stags will give any m.c. a bad time but that's "part of the game" and a smart m.c. knows it and good naturedly puts up with it--like a good Joe. After all you can't blame the guys, they want to know what they're get- ting into. Imagine a bozo tagging a bub and then find out that the lass in his arms is his best g.f., who is supposed to be sitting up with a sick uncle. It's dangerous! What I'm leading up to is last Saturday nite's S-S affair with. Roy Nikaido as the master of ceremony that our well meaning Mr. Turk gave "sudden death" with his edict that all stags without dates--imagine stags with dates--must go home because they persisted in crowding the floor. I'm not saying whether Mr. Turk did right or wrong-- that's for him to decide with his conscience. After all the stag s were the guests of the rec dept and the invitation stated stag-stagette so he should have expected some- thing like that to crop up. Roy was handling the sit- uation in his capable way, tho perhaps his patience was getting thin at times. M.C.'s job would be dull indeed if he didn't have something to say over the mike once in a while. What’s more, unfortunate - ly, Mr. Turk's rebuke of the stags may also be taken as lack of faith in Roy's ability to cope with the situation. I'm NOT glorifying the stags and putting premium on their antics because crowding the floor is a social evil, which, altho, incurable, can be curved, Neither am I taking the rec dept to task for what happened because outwardly they seem to be doing all they can to "push and pull." I don't start these arguments. I just write as I see it. But I think the incident will lead to closer under- standing of each other's position, that the host's overbearance is just as bad as guests' disrespect and that all of us are prone to crabbing and knock- ing. FRIENDS HOSTEL INVITES ALL PROSPECTIVE IOWA RELOCATEES Evacuees interested in seeking employment in the state of Iowa are urged by Relocation Officer Frank Gibbs of the Des Moines WRA office to come out on the Friends Hostel invita- tion and make contact for the various jobs personally to dicker for better offers and mutual understanding. Following the new trend of men for jobs rather than jobs for men, the reloca- tion officials find the new method much more satisfac- tory because the individual has an obligation to the job he secures and the em- ployer has the chance to study his employee before placing him. WRA contention is backed by many instances whereby the evacuees were able to get better jobs and higher rate of pay than the one originally offered after relocator-employer inter- view brought out the merits for better offer. According to Gibbs there are three agencies besides the WRA aiding in the pro- gress of relocation and giving every evacuee every opportunity for successful reasettlement;namely,Friends Service Committee,U.S. Em- ployment Service and the YWCA employment service. Community acceptance of nisei has been excellent due to present relocatees' good behavior and efficient work, only very isolated incidents have been brought up by question of national- ity, but only in remote cases. COMMUNITY LIBRARIES TO HOLD RECEPTION TOMORROW EVENING Commemorating the annual observance of Book week, a reception will be held to- morrow evening from 7 o' clock at the high school library. Featured on the enter- tainment program will be vocal numbers by the high school trio, clarinet se- lections by George Kubota and Charles Hinman, and dramatic reading by Robert George of three plays from Noel Coward's "Tonight at Eight-thirty".Refreshments will be served by the home- making class, and the pub- lic is cordially invited to attend. This program will begin a series of book reviews to be held every second Thursday hereafter. VITAL ===STATISTICS=== BIRTHS: To Mr. and Mrs. Takeo Tsukuda, 7E-9B, a girl. Nov. 5.
