25 GRIPPERS IN DAILY PRACTICE LOCAL ELEVEN EMPLOYS VARIED ATTACK FOR HOLIDAY TUSSLE "We will use a varia- tion of single wing, "A" formation and occasionally "T" formation to mix up our offensive attack,"con- fided Pete Furuta, acting coach of Amache Boys' club eleven, when interviewed by this reporter Thursday morning. Furuta is whip- ping his gridiron charges, composed entirely of high school students, into a fast, well - coordinated team, for the coming Nov. 11 pig- skin melee with Holly high invaders. "Our attack," continued Furuta, "will be made up around speedy Dave Matsu- shima at fullback and half - back Tommy "Swede" Furu- kawa, aerial artist and shiftiest runner on our inexperienced squad." Incidentally these two are the only experienced footballers on the team but with George Morishige, 10-flat man, playing op- posite Furukawa, coach Fu- ruta seems confident the team can "supply plenty of speed to generate touch- downs." According to Furuta the local eleven began prac- tice about two weeks ago while the Holly high grid- ders have played something like seven or eight games and are well-groomed, for the Armistice Day fracas. "I saw last week's Holly- Granada high game and will admit our opponent has a fine, strong team. "Our squad averages only about 145 pounds but we can make up our lack of weight and practice with plenty of speed and fighting spirit they have shown me," con- cluded Furuta. Boys' club eleven will have a 25-man roster to meet Holly's power with speed and deception. They are: Ends, Ronald Matsuoka, Min Takata, Jim Konishi, and Tom Tokunaga; tackles, Richard Kitagawa, Kenchi Muranaga, Tad Kuwatani, Frank Oda, Yas Hirano and Henry Nakano; guards, Kenji Yotsuya, Luther Mizukami, George Watanabe, Jim Hira- shiki, Fred Fukusawa and Kiyoshi Sanui. Centers, Tak Takesako and Kiyo Kumamoto;quarter- back, Tok Kunimoto; ha1f- backs, Andy Takata, Swede Furukawa, George Morishige and Archie Yoshida; and fallbacks, Dave Matsushima and Jack Hoshizu.____________________ PIONEER Sports November 6, 1943 Page7 Turnouts for badminton at the high school gym every Monday and Wednesday eve- nings,6:30 to 10:30 o'clock, have fulfilled all expect- ations last week, accord- ing to Director George Ni- nomiya. With the exception of "birds", the recreation department furnishes all the other essentials, such as racquets, nets, etc. The "birds" may be pur- chased at the 7E recreation office for a nominal charge. One important regulation is that all participants wear rubber soled (yes, heels too) shoes. For fur- ther information inquire to George Ninomiya or at the 7E recreation office. CAGE SIGN-UPS DEADLINE EXTENDED TO WEDNESDAY Basketball team sign-ups for the tour proposed casaba leagues have been extended until Wednesday evening, according to Athletic Direc- tor Harry Shironaka. Teams which have enter- ed are:Deacons, AA; Royal Flushers, Firemen, A; Hos- pital, Garage, Industrial; and Ramblerettes, Girls . This football team is not representing the pro- ject high school it seems. Just a "bunch" of high school students rounded up under sponsorship of the recreation department--and a football team was born. Your guess is just as good as mine why the high school doesn't want its name used. It is a pretty complicated thing and we don’t know--or do we? A GRAND HELPER John Kawata, former Pet- aluma (Calif.) high school three-year letter man in tennis, joined the PIONEER staff and will help us cover sports. He was PE assistant in- structor at the local high school at one time and in all probability the fans will see some expert sports- writing in the next issue. COACH PETE FURUTA Coach Furuta of the Boys’ club eleven was quite an athlete in his school days. He starred as a back- field man at University high school in Oakland, Calif., for three years and later at Marin JC. He also cavorted for the East Bay All-Stars,one of the outstanding nisei gridiron teams in Califor- nia before evacuation. FOOTBALL BOOSTER TAGS ON SALE To defray the general expenses of the Holly hi- Amache Boys' club grid tus- sle slated for Armistice Day, Nov. 11 at the 10F ball diamond, BOOSTER tags are being sold by the mem- bers of the local football squad and at the 7E rec- reation office.
