PIONEER Sports September 8, 1943__________________Page 7 FIRST 2ND HALF LOSS MOTOR POOL UPSET BY OUSTERS, 12-7 4-RUN RALLY CINCH TILT IN BIG WIN The over-confident Motor Pool aggregation found it- self on the short end of a 12-7 score as the underdog Dusters did the unexpected in a tense,exciting strug- gle Sunday afternoon at the 10F diamond. This defeat threw them into a tie with the Deltans for the 2nd half crown. The Deltans have already copped the last half cham- ionship. The game was played un- der protest by the Motor Pool from the 7th inning resulting from an umpire's decision. More detail may be found elsewhere on the Sports page. The Dusters went into the final inning with a slim 8-6 lead but iced the tilt by crossing the plate with four more big runs. Miles Hamada got on th e catcher's error and stole second. Kenji Umekubo filed out, but Jack Hagihara blasted a triple scoring Hamada. Then Sats Uyekubo, Richard Nimura, Chick Ku- nisaki, and Shig Sugano hit successive singles to score three. That ended the spree. The Motormen came back with a run in their half of the, inning but did no other damage. Joe Nakamura, southpaw twirler of the Motormen was off his usual form and allowed a hit and three walks in the 1st canto and gave way to Jack Otani with the bases bulging. Before the inning was over the Dusters had crossed the plate five times-on one hit-to take a commanding lead. Coming from behind, the MP's scored twice in the 2nd,added four more in the 4th to take the lead 6-4, but only for a couple of innings as the Dusters bagged two in the 6th, and another in the 8th to bring the count to 8-6 and set the stage for the final in- ning rally. For the Dusters Richard Nimura got 2 hits, while Motor Pool's Tad Ono got a double and a homer on an error to lead their respect- tive teams. Score by innings: Dus ' 500 002 014 - 12 8 ? Ono. 3 RD IN ROW Deltans Subdue Dodgers Behind Yoshiwara’s Hurling The high-flying Deltans won their third straight tilt in the 2nd half of the AA league by troucing the revamped Dodgers,12-4, Sunday morning at the 10F field, in a 7-inning game. The Dodgers, with new- comer, bespectacled Harry Makita on the mound, and veteran Frank Shoji at the short patch, appeared as though they were going to give the Deltans a tough battle. Opening their half of the 1st with a mighty homer by Romeo Kitagawa, the Dodgers added another in the 2nd, two more in the 3rd and tied up the Deltans, who had pushed across four in the 1st two stanzas. Then Mas Hoshino's boys petered out as Grove Yoshi- wara who replaced Tim Sasa- buchi in the initial frame with the bases loaded,went to work and held them score- less and hitless. He whiffed eight men in a row and es- tablished a new AA record for consecutive strik e - outs. The Deltans broke the 4- All deadlock in the 4th Panel by sending in two, And piled up six more tal- lies in the next three in- nings. They scored in every inning except the 3rd, Makita was blasted off the mound and replaced by side- arm specialist John "Oni- ons" Arishita. Hitting stars of the day were Deltan pitcher Yoshi- wara with 3 for 3, and teammate George Watanabe with a triple and a double in three tries. MOTOR POOL ENDS SEASON UNDEFEATED The champions of the A league, Pop Otani’s Motor pool gang, breezed by the Scrappers, 10-5, Saturday afternoon at the 10F dia- mond in their last league game and hung up an unde- feated-season record. Motormen Hide Noda,for- mer Rambler, was the hick- ory star of the game with 3 for 3. Score by innings: Scrap 010 010 12 - 5 6 5 M. P. 302 004 10 - 10 13 5 BATTS: Scraps- S.Sako, J. Kawata and Y.Otani; M. P.--G. Nakano, T. Fukuya- ma, T. Kimura and R. Iino, H. Sugiyama. GIRLS’ TILT AMACHE DUMPS GRANADA, 12-5 The Amache Girls’ A11- Star Softball team trekked to Granada Monday evening and trounced the Granada girls to the tune of 12-5 at the high school ground, Behind pitcher Shinobu Kunimoto’s one-hit, no-run, and 12 strike-out perform- ance in the first five in- nings she chucked,the local girls pushed across three markers in the 3rd and bombarded pitcher W. Mayhou for a total of nine runs and five hits in the fol- owing inning to win hani- ly. -----continued on page 8-----
