PIONEER Sports August 4, 1943____________________page 5 CLOSE TILT Dusters Win In Hectic Ninth Scoring their winning run in the last half of the ninth inning on a series of wild throws,the Dusters finally broke their hard- luck streak by nosing out the Motor Pool, 9-8, in an AA fracas Sundey morning at the 10F diamond., In the fatal ninth,first batter John Niizawa of the Dusters walked and was sac- rificed to second by John Nishimura. On an all attempt to pick off Niizawa, who was rounding second, Soapy Miyashima overthrew. Nii- zawa continued to third. Second sacker Ben Takama- tsu on retrieving the ball, threw wild to third, and NIizawa romped home with the all-important tally. The Dusters started their scoring in the initial inning by sending across four runs, and added two more in the second on Richard Nimura's two -run homer. They came thru with another in the fifth and also in the seventh. Trailing 6-1 in the third,the Motormen came to life in that inning thanks to Jim Hanamura who blasted a long right-field homer, driving in three runs. They piled on three more in the seventh, and another in their half of the final stanza to tie the count at 8-all. This was short-lived however, as the Dusters chalked up the deciding run in the final half. Yuba Joe Nakamura of the Motor Pool, who relieved Jack Otani in the second, was charged with the de- feat. Hitting stars of the day were Motor poolers Ben Takamatsu, George Fujimi- tsu, and Jim Hanamura with three each. For theDusters, Sats Uyekubo, Richard Ni- mura, and John Nishimura got two each. MOTOR POOL WINS PROTEST; TO REPLAY RAMBLERS SOON The recent A league game between the Motor Pool and the Ramblers,which was un- der protest,will be played in the near future,accord- ing to the rec dept. The St. Louis Sporting News ruled on the Motor Pool's protest as follows: "The batter is out if the attempted third strike fouls. However, he is not out if he misses the ball on an attempted bunt on the third strike, and he could, go to first if the catcher misses the ball." In the game, which the Motor Pool lost, 2-1, the batter reached first but was called out. SAB KAWAMURA WINS PITCHING DUEL, 5-2 Sab Kawamura outpitched John Kawata in a tight mound duel and led the Ski- bos to a victory over the Scrappers, 5-2, for their second straight victory in a Saturday afternoon A league doubleheader. Scrappers 002 000 - 2 4 4 Skibos 103 10x - 5 4 3 BATTERIES: Scraprs-J. Kawata and Y. Otani; Ski- bos-S. Kawamura, T. Abe and T. Abe, T. Miura. RAIDERS IN UPSET WIN OVER RAMBLERS Playing heads-up ball, the underdog Raiders led all the way and beat the Ramblers, 4-2, in the sec- ond A league game of the day. DELTANS’ 4TH WIN DODGERS TAKE 23-2 BEATING Amassing a total of 23 runs to their opponents' 2, the high-flying Deltans made it four in a row in a seven-inning AA league game Sunday afternoon at the 10F d iamond. The Deltans scored in every inning except the fifth, as they rolled up a big 15-0 lead at the end of the third inning,bombard- ing the offerings of Koi- chi Kimura and John Arishi- ta. In the third inning,which saw 16 men take their turns at the plate, the winners ran across 11 runs, fea- tured by Lefty Nishijima's third homer of the season and Harry Shironaka's first. The Dodgers contributed to their own downfall as they muffed six times in that inning and 11 in the game. The Dodgers scored their pair of runs in the fourth when with two outs and men on second, and third, left fielder Grove Yoshiwara dropped a long fly off the bat of Kane Miyoshi.
