August 4, 1943_____________PIONEER______________Page 3 BETWEEN US GIRLS BY (illegible) we have figured out that one of the most important, if not the most important, reasons for the large turn- out at the ondo practices (to those who don't know what an ondo practice is, all we have to say is: "Well, that is certainly too bad!") is the shaved ice that's passed out to all the participants in the course of the evening's activities. and with the increase of those unemployed (as a result of the recent offi- cial canning of more thait 500 center workers) has come an increase of people, especially guys, who lack money for such luxuries as shaved ice and colored wa- ter . therefore, at one of the practices held several nights ago, we found, among the spectators, quite a few boys who were trying to get up enough courage to trot in the circle and start earning their cup of shaved ice. then there was tomo who has a little more pride than the rest, who was de- termined to get his ice without having to jerk around the circle with the little gals. he stood there, straining his brains for a quarter hour. he finally figured out what he was going to do for his shaved ice. he patiently waited un- til they started passing out the ice, at which time he trotted over to the ice shaver and tried to look like he was working like heck, and in the course of this messing around, he managed to get his hands on a couple cups full of ice. and in the confusion (there always is confusion when there is shaved ice and lots of people), he was confi- dently but slyly toddling toward the laundry room and relative safety, when sev- eral definitely feminine voices purred out to him: "hellooooo, tomoooooo..." like a smart man, tomo ig- nored them, pretending not to hear, when one of the more aggressive gals dashed up to him and sweetly said to his now very sad face: "geeeeee, tomoooo, is that ice all for meeeee?..." with a very sick smile, tomo, who is always a gentleman, replied: "sure. . .heh, heh", and, after reluc- tantly handing over the hard-earned two cups of ice he went dashing, back to the ice shaver, and the last we saw of him, he was again trying to look busy as heck while trying harder to get his hands on another cup- ful or two of the precious shaved ice . . .
