Viewing SPORTS ===with shiro=== CONTINUING... Hoping that it might still be of interest to you Amache sportsters, this will be a continuation of last week's discourse on sports in Manzanar... BOXING... With classes open to the young boxing aspirants in camp, a schedule has been drawn up for those who wish to learn or further their ability in the American art of self defense. A special nisei instructor hired un- der the recreation depart- ment, is always on hand to offer pointers and to give instructions. A regulation outdoor boxing ring has been erected, with the floor of the ring about 3 feet above the ground. Money for equipment was raised through registration fees, and only registered members are able to use same... WEIGHT-LIFTING... Weight-lifting classes have also been started and three nights weekly have been set aside for regis- tered enthusiasts who wish special instructions. Other nights are open to those who wish to work out in the so-called gym. Beginners are taught by a nisei rec- reation employee whose full time is put into instructing the members. A permanent platform has been built in the recreation hall where all of the weight-lifting contests are held. MISCELLANEOUS… For the benefit of the man who stands behind the man behind the hat during a ball game,an announcer's shack, approx. 12 'x 12', built on a platform elevated 15 feet off the ground, is used at all of the big games to give the pitch-by-pitch account of the game being played. A press bench has also been built inside of the booth where the local pressmen sit and keep the official scores. This struc- ture can be pulled by truck to any desired location. THIRTY... Pressed for space so forced to quit (at the point of a gun)._______________________________ PIONEER Sports July 24, 1943 Page 5____________ TWO GAMES ON TAP DELTANS OUT FOR 3RD WIN The Deltans will be out for their third straight AA league triumph tomorrow morning when they meet the off-and-on Knines at the 10F diamond at 9 o'clock. Last week, both teams emerged victorious, the Deltans nosing out the hard- luck Dusters, who drew a bye this week, and the K- nines upsetting the Dodgers in a lopsided 9-1 walkaway. The Knines will start their newly found ace Yukio Miyamoto on the mound and will rely on George Maru- yama, George Matsuura, Egg Igasaki, and Pitcher Miya- moto, all .400 hitters, to bat in the runs. The favorites will rely on Mas "Lefty" Nishijima, current AA batting leader’s pitching to pull them through. Besides him the Deltans will have sluggers Flu Inaba and George Wata- nabe. The Knines cannot be counted short if they can play as they did against the Dodgers. They may pull another upset. The probable starters: DELTANS ..vs.. KNINES L.Nishijima P Y.Miyamoto T.
