PIONEER Sports July 17, 1943 Page 5 vIEWING sports ===with shiro=== DEBUT... Making my initial ap- pearance on the sport page with this column, "Viewing Sports," working along with Sports Editor Johnnie Tsu- ruta and sharing sports reporting duties, I will try to bring things of in- terest to you. through the medium of this column... COMPARISON... In comparing the athletic activities of Amache and Manzanar, we find that the sports in Amache is a jump- and-a-leap ahead of the sports scheduled in Manza- nar ... BASKETBALL... A heavier schedule dur- ing basketball season with some 60-odd teams to Amache's 22, was one reason for the delay at Manzanar in get- ting softball under way. And too, due to the tem- peramental weather condi- tions there, a good four weeks were needed in play- ing off the postponed games, for all games were played outdoors... SOFTBALL... Therefore, while soft- ball was still in its prim- itive stages, in Manzanar, Amache's softball leagues had been completed with their all-stars chosen and King Hardball crowding the spotlight. GOLF... Manzanar proudly presents its 18 hole golf course with the longest fairway a distance of approx. 550 yds. The shortest drive is the 89 yd. fairway over a large creek where the mountain stream flows, (trouts too). Truely a sportman's paradise. TENNIS... For all rabid tennis lov- ers, four clay courts have been constructed and con- ditioned, with a 15 feet fence around each two courts. Two courts are reserved for the tennis club members while the other two are o- pen to the residents. Most of the work on the golf course and the tennis courts were done through volunteers , MORE TO COME…THIRTY FOR NOW… AA BASEBALL TOMORROW TWO GAMES SCHEDULED The twice-defeated K- nines will tangle with the undefeated Dodgers tomorrow morning at the 10F diamond from 9 o'clock in an AA league game. The Dodgers showed lots of power at the plate Sun- day when they walloped Bob- by Umekubo, Dusters' ace pitcher, for 15 hits. With the return of Kenny Ohki to the line-up, and the slugging of Jack Hamahashi, Dave Matsushima, and Nob Kuwatani, they are favored to cop their second League win. The underdog Knines, who have no steady pitcher to bank on, will rely on Egg Igasaki, George Matsuura, and Yukio Miyamoto, all .400 hitters. The probable starting line-ups: KNINES DODGERS Y. Miyamoto P G. Tanji S. Nomura C N. Kuwatani G. Matsuura 1B T. Kuwatani S. Fujita 2B R. Kitagawa G. Maruyama 3B K. Ohki K. Ozaki SS B. Matsu'ma E. Igasaki LF J. Hama'shi T. Kamei CF J. Shiro A. Hirose RF K. Miyoshi In the afternoon game from 2 o'clock, the Dusters will meet the Deltans, who are the "team, to -beat" in another AA league fracas at the 10F field. The Deltans, boasting an experienced team from top to bottom, will start Lefty Nishijima on the mound, and should cop their second straight game with- out too much trouble. Minus the services of Mas Uyesugi, Miles Hamada, and Hobi Fujiu, who have left for outside employ- ment, the Dusters will have to juggle their line-up and will have a hard time match- ing the slugging Deltans. The probable starting line-ups include: DELTANS BUSTERS L. Nishi'ma P B. Umekubo T. Ioka C C. Kunisaki G. Kawamura 1B R. Nimura M. Ishigaki 2B K. Umekubo F. Inaba 3B S. Sumano H. Shiro'ka SS J.
