PIONEER Sports July 7, 1943 Page 7 Johnnie presents by tsuruta THE CASE OF A SHOE Dave Matsushima, Dodg- ers ' short, patch, has a funny habit or whatever you want to call it. Play- ing a practice game against the Motor Pool of the A league he slammed two extra base blows to right field. Everytime he rounds the turn at second base he just lets his shoes fly off and runs in his stocking feet. The first time he left one of his spikes behind, and the next time he left both of them. In fact, during his second time, he forgot to touch second base and had to come back and be satisfied with only a dou- ble. I guess shoe ration- ing has hit him pretty bad. Take it easy, Davy. "PEPPER MARTIN" ISHIGAKI Mas Ishigaki, second baseman of the Deltans, showed some Pepper Martin stuff when he walked, stole second, third and home. THE MAN OF THE WEEK Our men of the week are both pitchers. Bobby Umekubo, pitching for the Dusters showed mid- season form by pitching five innings of no-hit,no- run ball, and allowed only two hits and a run in the six innings he worked on the mound. Lefty Nishijima, pitch- ing for the Deltans, al- lowed only nine scattered hits and struck out the same amount of men. He also starred at the plate getting three out of five including a triple and a homer. It was his big day. TOO HOT It sure was a hot Sun- day afternoon at the Dus- ter-Knine game. It can be seen by the fact that both catchers couldn't go through the nine-inning games. Joe Harada catching for the Knines left the contest at the middle of the fourth inning in favor of Roy Sa- tow. Duster Miles Hamada also retired at the middle of the sixth inning and Chick Kunisaki had to take his place. Yes, pity the poor guys behind the plate. Yes,the umpires too. They sure work hard, and it is hard work especially when it is hot. A REQUEST The rec dept asks that everybody keeps off the 10F diamond on Saturday eve- nings. With the cooperation of the fire dept, the field is watered and made ready for Sunday morning's AA game, so let's stay out.
