Granada P I O N E E R Vol. I, No. 80 Amache, Colorado July 7, 1943 YAMANAKA Heads Council Jimmie Yamanaka,8K rep- resentative, was elected chairman of the Council Monday morning. Other of- ficers are Walt Higuchi, 7E, vice chairman; Tsugime Heya, 9E, secretary; Shin- ichi Furuya,9K, treasurer. Elected to the executive committee are Roy Iizuka, 6E, District I; Shiro Abe, 6G, District II; Ed Toku- naga, 11E, District III; Jimmie Yamanaka, 8K, Dis- trict IV; and Jim Takata, 12H, District V. Issei are represented in the executive positions by Furuya, Takata, and Iizuka. OPEN HOUSE NEWSMEN VISIT Thirteen newspaper and radio representatives were guests of the center during "open house" on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of last week, at the invita- tion of the OWI. They were : Francis Price, Radio Station KFKA,Greeley;Clyde E. Moffitt, Express Cour- ier, Fort Collins; Bill Wiseman, WOW, Omaha; David Clark, Gazette and Tele- graph, Colorado Springs; J. Harold Cowan, Omaha World-Herald, Omaha; Wally Reef, KFEL, Denver; Rex Brown,KOA, Denver; L. Car- ter Kaanta,Denver Monitor, Denver; E.B. Garnett, Kan- sas City Star,Kansas City, Mo.; G. M. Hunsley, Albu- querque, N. Mex.; R. K. Welch, Kit Carson Herald, Kit Carson, Colo.; George F. Williams, The Ledger- News, Antonito, Colo.; and A. F. Pride, Lamar Daily News, Lamar. CARNIVAL PARADE TO OPEN GALA THREE-DAY CELEBRATION The three-day celebra- tion to raise funds to support character building organizations and to pro- mote the s ales of War Bonds and Stamps will start with a parade at 6:30 p.m. Friday from Terry hall. Those in the line of march Are asked to assemble at 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the funniest, most original, and the worst entries, according to Ed Tokunaga, parade chairman, W.Ray Johnson,Henry Halli- day, Donald Harbison,Jimmie Yamanaka, Joe Kayokata, Kenichi Shintani, and Khan Komai will be the judges. The line of march will be from Terry hall, down 8th street, to G, then up to the high school audi- torium, where the opening ceremony will follow. The Boy Scout Troop 179 Drum and Bugle corps will play the opening number. Led by Henry Suzukida, the audience will sing "The Star Spangled Banner." Scout Commissioner Ed To- kunaga will lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. In respect to the men in the armed forces, a two-minute silent medita- tion will be observed. Taps will be blown by Rob- ert Uragami and Satoshi Hayashi. Greetings will be extended by James G. Lindley and Harvey E.Turk. Sumi Kawamura will sing a solo. Kay Sugahara, gen- eral manager of the carni- val, will be the chairman. All concessions and booths will open immediate- ly following the ceremony. On Saturday and Sunday, the Midway, which is built around the auditorium, will be open from 1:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., according to Mitch Kashiguchi, conces- sion chairman. A shibai, "Kunisada Chuji," and a dance, "Gen- roku Hanmi Qdori," will be presented on the 9F open air stage, Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m. The Music Makers will furnish the music for the dance,Saturday at the high continued on page 6- LINDLEY CALLS JOINT MEETING Project Director James G. Findley will meet with block managers and newly- elected councilmen, 9 a.m.tomorrow, to discuss various center problems, principally the labor situation. The meeting, will be held in Town Hall. Because of the impor- tance of the meeting, project Director Lindley urges all councilmen and block managers to be pre- sent. VOLUNTEERS TO BE RECRUITED A recruiting party from Camp Savage is expected to visit the center about the middle of this month, ac- cording to Walter J. Kno- del,Selective Service reg- istrar. All nisei men with know- ledge of the Japanese lang- uage are urged to volunteer for the Army language school at Savage,which gives them an opportunity to make a great direct contribution to the war effort, said Knode1.
