June 30, 1943________________PIONEER_______________Page 3 PROPERTY TAXES ENTITLED TO EXEMPTION The California Attorney General has recently ruled that evacuees temporarily residing outside of the State are entitled to an exemption of personal property taxes on household, goods up to an assessed valuation of $100. In pre- paring 1943 personal pro- perty tax b ills, so me counties gave tax payers the benefit of this exemp- tion and others did not. Any evacuee whose legal residence as of March 2, 1942,was within the county in which the taxes were lev- ied, may apply for house- holder's exemption, or for a refund of the tax paid on property to the assessed value of $100. Any evacuee questioning the amount of his 1943 per- sonal property tax bill should, first d e t ermine whether or not he has been granted the householder’s exemption. If he believes he is entitled to and has not received it, he should address his request to the county assessor and attach an affidavit setting forth the facts regarding his le- gal residence as of March 2, 1942. PEGLER Criticizes WRA Westbrook Pegler, noted syndicated columnist,wrote recently in his column, "Fair Enough" that the WRA administration "is a sticky mess that should be turned over to the Army for ef- ficient handling." He thinks the "bad Japs should be detained and treated with austerity and the good ones released for their own good as well as ours ." Pegler said on the basis of personal observation (Poston center), the evac- uees are not overfed or pampered. CROWDED QUARTERS CAUSE EVICTION SAN FRANCISCO, June 22 --Eviction of occupants of overcrowded houses in the area comprising the former Japanese quarter was ordered by Mayor Rossi . Rossi's order followed a tour he made through the district lest week. The Mayor declared he found as many as five families liv- ing in a five-room house-- one family to a room. The Sunday home edition of the Denver Post carry- ing a picture and the story of this former Sen Francisco newsboy remarked: "...As a token of his feelings about the war,say those who know him, he has adopted the typically Ameri- can, name of Johnson, and his favorite phrase is, 'Hell, no! I don't want to go back to Japan.'" FILL OUT FORMS TO TRANSFER PROPERTY Evacuees who have house - hold goods and personal effects stored at Tenrikyp church, First and Saratoga Streets, Los Angeles, are asked to fill out WRA Forms 156 at the property office, south administration build - ing, room 5. Since the church had been broken in- to twice, evacuees are be- ing advised to remove their belongings to a WRA ware- house. Karpen, commanding officer of the 335th Escort guard, will shortly be transferred to the headquarters of Military District No. 3, St. Louis, Mo. He will exchange posts with Capt. Reuben A. Jack- son, who is due to arrive here soon from St. Louis. Capt. Karpen has been stationed at Amache since Nov. 5, 1942. At the time of his arrival, he was 1st Lieut. Karpen; he received his promotion on Dec. 11, 1942 . GROUPS TO STUDY, DISCUSS CO-OP Study and discussion groups will be conducted by Consumer Enterprises during July to familiarize the residents with consumer co-op history, principles, and the immediate problems of the local cooperative stores and shops, accord- ing to E.H. Runcorn, asso- ciate enterprises superin- tendent. Blocks meeting t h is week and next are as fol- lows: 12K and 12H, E. T. Konno, discussion leader; 11K end 11H, Kenjiro Noza- wa; 10H and 9H, Saburo Cujow; 12G and 11G, Juzo Tamura and Koshiro Umeku- bo; 12F and 11F, Yoichiro Uyeda; 12E and HE, Iwazo Hamamoto; 10E and 9E, Dr. T. Miyamoto. Meetings are scheduled for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. EVACUEES VISIT FARMS IN IOWA As guests of the Iowa Vegetable Growers associa- tion, Tokutaro Hatanaka, Nagafumi Nomura,and Rokuro Okubo are visiting Des Moines, Ia. The purpose of the trip is to look over agricultural possibilities for evacuees, and to ac- quaint the Iowans with Japanese farmers. SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS MUST BE RETURNED Principal S. Clay Coy announces that all students who have not returned school textbooks must do so immed- tiately. No grade cards will be sent out until all books are returned, he said.
