PIONEER Sports Page 6_________________________May 25, 1943 SPORTS Yard bird By YOSH FUJITA ALL-STARS With the completion of the first round of AA play, we are picking the first round all-stars. At first base is dependable George Kawamura of the Deltans; on second is flashy Jack Hagihara of the Dusters; third base, one of the weakest spots in the loop, has Flu Inaba of the Del- tans; Dodger Fred Kishi is a standout at shortstop with his powerful hitting; in the outfield are Wahoo Sue Fukuyama, Dodger Jack Hamahashi,Duster Sats Uye- kubo and Grove Yoshiwara of the Deltans. Behind the plate is the Dodger iron- man Ken Ohki and Wahoo Tad Mukaihata was all by himself during the first round on the mound. WET FIELD During the past several weeks, teams have been using the new fields located at 10F. In connection with these new "diamonds, the teams have been complaining of the soft dirt in the in- field. We wonder if it is possible for the rec dept. to wet the infield down with the wafer hydrant beside the field. This would be o n ly necessary in the league games. CHATTER In the A League there are 20 players swatting the pill for a 350 average or better. That is tops in any league. Koe Yoshida’s position, as athletic dir- ector is open, and anyone interested, see the rec dept. According to Jackson Ito, all persons wishing to join the new league called the woman haters', contact Jack Ito or John Tsuruta. YARDBIRD'S ADIOS Thanks to the riddled rec athletic directors Koe Yoshida and femme Mickey Hayashi for their fine co- operation during my short regime as sports editor. They deserve more credit than has been given them during the past months. Introducing the new sports editor, John Tsuruta, here 's to a bettor page than the Yardbird has been putting, out. -30- AA WINNERS DODGERS, DUSTERS ROPE FOES Combining four walks , two errors and three hits for seven runs in the open- ing inning, the hustling Dodgers moved into first place by sweeping the Wa- hoos, 8-1, in the wild AA pennant race Sunday after- noon at the 10F diamond. For the third successive week end,Dodger Fred Kishi enjoyed a perfect day, get- ting two hits in two at- tempts. The lone Wahoo run came in the final stanza, when Soapy Miyashima opened with a double into cen- ter, stole third and came in on Sue Fukuyama's long fly. Turning in a two-hit performance, Romeo Kitaga- wa checked the visiting nine, while his teammates gathered seven bingos off the offerings of Shig Fu- kuyama . In the second game, the Dusters polished off the Deltans 5-4 to capture their second league win. The contest was called off after five innings because of the blackout. The Dust- ers got off to a good first inning by massing two walks and four hits for four runs, while the De1tans came back in their half, with a walk and three hits for one run. In the fourth inning, the Deltans earned three more on two hits and four walks after the Dusters had got another in the third. The batting barrage was led by newly added Bob Umekubo of the Dusters, getting two for three. Chick Funisaki of the Dust- ers and Deltan Joe Fukumitsu both allowed six hits. NO BRIDGE AT 11H Roy Iizuke, bridge chair- man, announced that the brIdge sessions that are now being held at the 11H rec hall will not be con- tinued. The sessions at the 7F rec will continue as before on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. STARLETTES TOP TOPPERS Revenging last week's defeat by the Twenteens, the Starlettes came from behind to edge out the Top- pers 7-6 Sunday afternoon at the loser's Field. Piling up a 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Toppers gradu- ally lost the lead during the Starlette rallies in the closing frames. In the final stanza, Suzy Yawata, of the Toppers, slammed a round tripper to nearly tie the ball game. Tuffy Inouye chucked six-hit ball to Phyllis Ki - noshita's five-hit game for the winners.
