Granada P I O N E E R Vol. I, No. 63 Amache, Colorado May 8, 1943 Farm Plans To Recruit 200 Tentative plans were made for the recruiting of nearly 200 farm workers in the next three weeks, at a meeting of the repre- sentatives of the blocks and the farm section Thur s - day evening at Town hall. A tour of the project farm will be conducted next week in order to increase the interest in this pro- gram. It was felt by the group that those with farm experience or with an in- terest in the farm would feel an urge to get out and help if they actually vis- ited the field and saw the progress made. Meetings will be con- ducted in each block to impress upon the residents the importance of the farm program and the acuteness of the labor shortage. Representatives in the block will make direct con- tast with unemployed persons to urge them to work on the farm. The meeting was opened by Project Director James G. Lindley, who urged the people to make the “apa- thetic. . . conscious that they are a minority group here and are not popular." He asked the old and the young to forget their sqaub - bles as "the farm need you both" and "the center' is going to need the farm." John Spencer, new chief of the agriculture divi- sion, said that people who pass the farm, are watching its progress with interest. "Many," he declared, "expect and some hope it will fail. This is a challenge to all of you." A report on the progress to date of the vegetable acreages were made by Roy Nakatani who introduced each of the unit supervi- sors. Henry Shimizu re- ported on the poultry unit and George Miyake on the beef cattle and feed crops. Miyake emphasized, that it was "our "bellies" that were concerned and the attitude that the government would feed us would not furnish us with food that no longer existed. Residents are asked to vote for the amendment Mon- day in their respective block offices, which will remain open from 1 to 7 p.m. The amendment will become effective immediate- ly if approved by a majori- ty vote.
