Granada PIONEER_________________________________ Vol. I, No. 56 Amache, Colorado April 14, 1943 ARMY CALLS NISEI AGAIN (The following publica- tion release from the Army Intelligence Service Lan- guage school, Savage, Minn., is authorized for use only by the Granada PIONEER. Un-authorized re-publica- tion or quotation is forbid- den. --ed. note.) The Army is again plan- ning to select for its lan- guage school at Savage, Minn., an additional 250 enlisted men for a new course of specialized Japa- nese language instruction, beginning July 1, according to 1st Lieut. Paul F. Rusch, assistant director of per- sonnel, language school headquarters. This program is open to both single and married ni- sei who can meet the fol- lowing qualifications. 1. Applicants must be male citizens of the United States, of draft age and physically fit for induc- tion into the United States Army. 2. While applicant should preferably be a gra- duate of either an American high school or of a Japa- nese middle school (chugak- ko), he must possess a fundamental knowledge of both the English and Japa- nese languages. He must have adequate command of the Japanese language, both oral and written. He should have facile use of "hira- gana," "kata-kana," and a good number of "kanji" nor- mally used in written Japa- nese. Men found qualified will be given a six-month, language specialist course, and upon completion of the course will be sent out into the field with combat troops. The duties are definitely not of “espionage” nor " se- cret agent" type of work. A limited number of students who show special aptitude and temperament for teach- --- continued on page 2 FIVE ARE ELECTED TO JUDICIAL COMMISSION Five of eight members of the center Judicial com- mission were elected Monday by the Council, each of them representing one dist- rict. Their duties will con- sist of hearing and trying all cases with the excep- tion of felonies and civil cases, and of applying pen- alties for the violations. The three remaining members will be selected from among the administra- tion officials. Those elected Monday: District 1--Shuichi Sa- saki of 6F-3C, District 2 --Dr. Ituge Okubo of 6G- 3B, District 3--Oski Tani- waki of 9E-4D, District 4 -- Saburo Cujow of 10H-10F, District 5--Seichiro Fuji- oka of 11K-8D. ELECT THREE TO FILL VACANCIES An election for three council vacancies will be held tomorrow at the re- spective block managers' offices. The following nominees have been named: Block 8E, Frank Naka- Mura; 12E, George Iwanaga; and 8K, Jimmie Yamanaka and Mrs. Masaji Murai. Ballots may be obtained at the block managers' of- fices from 12 noon to 7 p.m. tomorrow. CO-OP MEMBERSHIP MEETING POSTPONED The Consumer Enterprise membership meeting, sched- uled in the co-op by-laws for the second Tuesday of April, has been postponed until further notice, an- nounced Akira Inaba, secre- tary. ====CALENDAR==== TODAY 7:00 p.m.--Movies, 12F mess hall. 7:45 p,m.--Movies, 12H mess hall. The school music department revealed that these instruments pri- vately owned, will be sold regardless of the amount bid. Soloists will perform on the various pieces so that the bidders may judge the value and limitations of the instruments. They will be on display from 7 p.m. for those who wish to go early and examine them. The adult beginning band will make its debut that night with several selec- tions. Tad Hascall will be mas - ter of ceremonies and auc- tioneer. MURAI ELECTED TO EXECUTIVE COUNCIL Tadao Murai, 8F block representative, was re- cently elected to repre- sent District I for the executive committee of the Council to replace Akira Inaba, 7F councilman. Inaba resigned to ac- cept a position as secre- tary of the board of direc- tors of Consumer Enterprises.
