/Granada P I O N E E R Vol. I, No. 49 Amache, Colorado March 20, 1943 DEDICATION WEEK BEGINS Week of Dedication, un- der the sponsorship of the Granada Christian church, will begin Wednesday and end Sunday. Sermons for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will be held at the 10H recreation hall at 7 p.m., while Saturday's and Sunday's meetings will be at Terry hall. Speakers include Rev. Curtis Westfall of the Lamar Presbyterian church, Rev. Harry Hashimoto, Rev. Gab- riel Upton of the Lamar M ethodist church, Dr. Kirby Page, writer and traveller, and Rev. Chiaki Kuzuhara. Special music will be provided by the church choir and Dorothy McDougall, The public is cordially invited to attend these sermons. FATHER LAVERY IS HERE ON VISIT Father Hugh Lavery of the Los Angeles Maryknoll mission will speak tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock at the 11K recreation hall. Father Lavery wishes to meet all the Maryknoll people during his stay here. He is scheduled to leave the center Sunday evening. 124 VOLUNTEERS ENLIST IN NISEI COMBAT UNIT One hundred and forty-three Japanese-Americans from this center have enlisted in the US Army, James G. Lindley, project director, announced today. Of these, 124 soon will begin training in a special combat unit recently announced by the Army. The other 19 enlisted last December and have been in training at Camp Savage, Minn., since that time. The regular enlistment program for Americans of Japanese extraction was announced by Secretary of War Stimson on January 28, and began at the center on February 10, with an Army recruiting team in charge. The total enlistment is about 11 per cent of the male population of the center between the ages of 17 and 38. Among the volunteers are 15 married men, 8 of whom have children. Forty- one of the enlistees have attended college, including 12 graduates. The average age is 23 years. There are 76 Protestants, 6 Cath- olics, and 17 Buddhists in the group. "We all are proud of the men from this center who have joined with other American citizens to fight for their country. VOCATIONAL TRAINING COURSES TO BE GIVEN Adult vocational training courses in production and mechanics for residents 17 years of age and over not attending school have been approved for this center by the Colorado Office of Vo- cational Education and will begin shortly with quail- fied instructors in charge. Production courses will include the .study of poul- try, swine, dairy, beef, sheep, and vegetables. Mechanical training courses will cover tractor shop, machine repair, main- tenance, operation, and service. The minimum re- quirement for these courses is 120 hours; and for the production classes, 20 hours each. All interested persons are asked to attend the fol- lowing group meetings at which the program will be explained: 11 and 12 blocks, Monday, 7:30 p.m., 12H rec hall; 8, 9, and 10 blocks, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., 10H rec hall; and 6 and 7 blocks, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., 6H rec hall. Co-op Holds Election Today Co-op members over 18 years of age will vote to- day for nine members of the board of directors, and for three members for both the membership and auditing ,committees at their respect- tive block information of- fices, 12 noon to 7 p.m. WRA personnel co-op members may vote in any block on presentation of official receipts. Block council- men and managers will serve as election judges.
