BULLSEYE by Jiro Sumita WHAT NEXT? Wet weather may be halt- ing the sports activities in Denson, Arkansas, but Amache residents can thank the recreation department for the temporary standstill of the sports activities here. Two weeks have passed since the last basketball game sponsored by the recreation department was played, but at this writing, no steps have been taken in organizing the next major sport. If this is to be softball, we think more attention should be given to it--and soon. ACTIVE Probably the most sports- active center outside of those in California is the Gila project in Arizona. Over there, not one sport but many sport programs are being carried out and they are all well organized. Topping this list at pres- ent is basketball, with baseball coming right up. Other organized sports are softball, sumo, and boxing. Besides these, track meets are being planned. We can draw only one conclusion from all this, and that is that the Gila recreation department is a hustling organization. NEW NAMES Where is football called "tokyu;" hockey, "zokyu;" and golf, "dakyu?" Well, it’s in Japan. According to the sports column in the Denson Trib- une, a recent broadcast from Tokyo heard in New York stated that the Jap- anese Athletic association had changed the names of American and English im- ported sports. Previously, these sports had a similar sound as in English; namely: "Rogubi," "hokki," and "gorofu." Baseball had already been changed in similar category, "yakyu." LEADERS One block that isn't waiting for the recreation department to push along their sports program is Block 11G. Basketball, softball, and volleyball teams--they have them all. TSUCHIYA IS SHOGI KING Kenji Tsuchiya, 10H, won the three-day shogi tournament, competed by 75 persons, held at the 8G Goh- Shogi hall last week end, according to Andrew Tsuchi- ya, co-supervisor of the tournament. The second place winner was Kanejiro Takai, while Isao Nakagawa took third place. Trophies to the winners will be awarded later by the recreation department, concluded Tsuchiya._____________ PIONEER Sports March 20, 1943 Page 7_______ CAGE LEAGUE KEPT ALIVE Intramural basketball league games for the second semester, which began this week in the boys’ high school PE department, are expected to continue a month, according to Coach John C. Hoke. Meanwhile, the school gym is expected, to be com- pleted, and to windup the season a school-wide cage tournament is being planned in the new gym._____________________ Thank You! For the cooperation and patronage given dur- ing the basketball sea- son, the recreation and education departments express their thanks to the residents.___________________ TURK RETURNS FROM TRIP TO DENVER Harvey Turk, head of the recreation department, re- turned Wednesday from a four-day business trip to Denver. Kay Matsuhiro, Koe Yo- shida, and John Kimura, who accompanied him, re- turned this morning after attending the AAU basket- ball tourney. -----SPORTS----- IDE-MS -----by Joseph Ide----- the glamorous Garbo has her feet, the dynamic Dur- ant has his schnozzle, but so what?...they have nothing on our boy Hirano, who has exclusive rights to a chin that is a C-H-I-N... the last issue of the PIONEER carried a complete page exclusively Hirano, but the sports dept didn't get a chance to toss in their 2-cents worth…so, tho' late, we come in for our digs now… we first eyed Hirano at the old PIONEER office in the 8F rec hall...he was hustling around the dusty and crowded news-den sup- posedly in the process of setting up a readable rag ...we, in our shy way, said hello and he said hello but with the darndest look of are-you-real? in his eyes...then he disappeared under a pile of copy...two minutes later he came up for air and pointing his chin at us (which I noticed for the first time then), he bellowed, "How about checking up on why the water pump isn't working ... that was our introduction to Editor Hirano and our first assignment on the PIONEER… since then Hirano (or Bobbo as we affectionately call him) has gotten under our skin...his chin, his squint-eyed smile, his easy-going manner, his "knock yourself out,'' gets us. we've, never seen anyone work as hard, as he does without so much as a peer …this fragile-1ooking specimen of the human (?) race is a dynamo on legs, piano legs at that…and he abounds with energy and go... we've yet to see the boy get mad or riled… even as a member of the championship Zephyr cage team he was the coolest man under pressure… Hirano will be heading for the Army soon...the office won't seem the same without him...we'11 miss him, sure, but we'll miss more the sight of that "unique" chin...and yeah, who's going to take all our dough from now on?...
