PIONEER SPORTS March 13, 1943 Page 7 MAT BOUT DESCRIBED In a recent issue of the LA Times, Sportswriter Bra- ven Dyer quotes from the Chicago Daily Times to wit: "Karl Pojello, former heavyweight wrestler, who boasted that he could still (he is 6O) whip any jujitsu exponent in the world, was pitted against Tamura Masa- to, an instructor at the Jujitsu Institute of Amer- ica, and considered as best in this country. "After 25 minutes of vicious grappling the ref- eree, a licensed official in Illinois, called off the match. During that time Tamura proved superior, knocking out Pojello once and repeatedly breaking Greco-Roman holds… "Tamura is an American- born Japanese and says he is trying to aid this country by teaching Amer- icans how to defend them- selves against the juiitsu- trained soldiers of his own race. He was a true sports- man through the contest, resorting only to the tricks of his game, which he emphasized isn't a sport, but a from of war- fare!" NO B ALL-STARS The picking of the All- Star B teams was dropped as the managers failed to turn in their choices. INDIANS TAKE FOURTH WIN FROM HOLLY, 48-32 The high-flying Amache Indians registered their fourth win over the Holly wildcats by turning back the invaders, 48-32, in the feature game played at the Granada high school gymnasium Tuesday night. The first half of the contest was closely fought and the local boys were clinging to a 25-20 lead at the intermission. The second half told a different story as the Indians with Mas Uyesugi, Lefty Kitagawa, and "Slug" Yotsuya leading the scoring parade rolled up a command- ing lead. The Wildcats' offensive thrust was held down to 12 points. Kitagawa and Uyesugi were high for the Indians with 11 and 10 points res- spectively. T. Gribben made 12 for the losers. AMACHE B’S SMEAR HOLLY Holding the Holly junior varsity to a mere 3 points, the Amache B’s rang the bell for 41 digits to chalk up their eighth consecutive win of the reason in the second game at the Granada gym Tuesday. The scoring for the hapless Holly five was done by guard Phifer, who dropped in a field goal, and for- ward Pinkerton, who made good a gratis toss. Both of these tallies were made in the first quarter. Using every man on the bench, the local B's scored at will to make the game a runaway. Sumito Nabeta collected 8 for the winners. TROOP 162 IS CAGE CHAMP Troop 162 was crowned the champions of the A division in the Boy Scout cage leagues. By going through the season with three straight wins, they earned the right to the title. Members of the Troop 162 team are Jack Ito, Miles Hamada, Russ and Ken Yama- ga, Tom Sasaki, and Kats Arimoto. The B and C divisions will complete their seasons soon. PREP INTRAMURAL TEAM CROWNED Tosh Okamura's hard- fighting quintet captured the high school's intra- mural championship by de- feating Hank Shimada’s team, 4-3, in a one-quarter game at the Granada gym Tuesday. Preceding this tilt, the teams paired off in a regular game, which the once-defeated Shimada boys won, 20-18. Until then, the Okamura five was un- defeated. Its loss neces- sitated the extra quarter playoff for the champion- ship. SLUGGERS, ZEPHYRS IN SOFTBALL TILT The 8F Sluggers and the Amache Zephyrs' pick -up team will meet tomorrow afternoon at the 8E field in a softball tilt.
