Granada P I O N E E R Vol. I, No. 46 Amache, Colorado March 10, 1945 ENLISTMENT ENDS TODAY; MINIDOKA HEADS LIST A special appeal is be- ing directed towards single and unattached men who answered "Yes, if drafted" to number 27 of the ques- tionnaire to come in for Army enlistment before it closes at 4:30 p.m. today, said Walter J. Knodel, ad- ministrative member of the military team. Quite a number of last- minute volunteers have been reporting to the employment office. According to sta- tistics, men with a greater amount of responsibilities have come in, he added. In a wire received yes- terday, WRA Director Dillon S. Myer announced that 300 Minidoka residents volun- teered for the Army. The 300 volunteers in- clude 41 who are married and 24 with children, and 11 Japanese-born men who are not eligible for serv- ice at the present time. Project Director James G. Lindley reminded resi- dents that enlistments will be taken until 4:30 p.m. today at the office of Wal- ter J. Knodel. Day of Prayer To Be Observed March 12--a date ob- served as the "world day of prayer"--will be com- memorated here with a special program to be held at the 7H hall on Friday, 10 a.m., by the Granada Protestant church. W. Ray Johnson, com- munity services head, and Dr. Allston from the Oma- ha Presbyterian headquart- ers, will speak on the theme of the day. RED CROSS NETS $1795 The Granada relocation center raised $1794.93 as its contribution to the Red Cross War fund, announced John 0. Moore, head of the drive. Of this amount, $540.17 came from the ad- ministrative personnel and $1254.76 from the evacuees. The education department led all the administrative divisions with a contribu- tion of $166, while 8K turned in the largest sum among the center blocks, with $60.35. No active soliciting was carried on among the evacuees, nor was there a quota set. All contribu- tions by the center resi- dents were voluntary, Moore reminded. The $500 goal set for this project ap- plied to the administrative personnel only. Moore expressed his ap- preciation for the co-oper- ation he received from both the administrative staff and the evacuees. The result, he thought, was quite remarkable. RESIDENTS MUST REGISTER NOW Any person who failed to do so must register immediately at the employ- ment office , announced Registrar Lewis W. Fans- lan. CITIZENS’ CONFERENCE PLANNED A conference, "Better Citizens in a Better Com- munity," sponsored by the Amache Co-ordinating coun- cil and under the general chairmanship of Jimmie Ya-, manaka, will be held Satur- day at Terry hall. Following registration at 1:30 p.m., a general as- sembly will be held with Masao Satow acting as chair- Man. Henry Suzukida will open the session by leading the group in community sing- ing. After Project Director James G. Lindley's greetings to the gathering, Hana Uno, Joe Okida, and Edith Kodama will lead the various dis- cussion groups. A recreation period will follow with Morris Soglow of the physical education department in charge. The evening session will begin with community sing- ing at 6:30 p.m. The Co- ordinating council, its purpose and work, will be explained by chairman Jimmie Yamanaka, after which the delegates will meet in smaller discussion groups under Sumi Kashiwagi, George Ono, Yuri Domoto, and Harry Naka. Morris Soglow will then lead the group in games. The conference committee members are Jimmie Yamana- ka, general chairman; Hana Uno and Oski Taniwaki, pro- motion; John Moore and Ma- sao Satow, program; Harry Takei and Mrs. Miyahara, arrangement.
