IN MEMORIUM TRIBUTE OF APPRECIATION TO MR. YERVANT "ED" MEL- IKIAN I feel highly honored to have the privilege on this occasion to express my heartfelt feelings about someone whom I have known most of my life, with whon. I have had the opportunity to work, not only on community activities but in our complex business and social life. Ed Melikian will be long remembered for his contribution to the development of Fresno and the San Joaquin Valley. Perhaps the greatest living tribute to him will be his surviving family who in their close association will carry on in his tradition and with his philosophy. His earliest development work was in agriculture, developing of land into the rich, productive farms and later when circumstances permitted a new industry was born and Ed Melikian with his associates through their Cameo Vineyards operation entered into the wine business, organizing the Cameo Wineries whose brands and labels are still well known. His sincerity and good judgment, integrity, fairness and consideration not only made his venture a huge success but helped lay the foundation for the present California wine industry. Many of his early associates in this industry will long remember his contributions. Ed was one of the founders of the California Home for the Armenian Aged, an institution that this community can well be proud of. Ed not only devoted his tireless efforts to organize and start the institution but he served for many years on its board of directors as president and advisor. It was Ed who conceived the idea for the annual benefit banquet to raise funds to further develop and enlarge the Home. Just a few days ago he was still working unselfishly to make the pneoming banquet a success. I am confident that it will be a success and it will be another lasting tribute to him for his sacrifice and devotion. Ed was the organizer and a lifetime member of the Good- fellows Club, a local luncheon club of fellowship, organized to meet once a week to better understand each other and to better serve our community. Ed also served with devotion in an organization that is very little known except by those who came from his native city in Armenia, the Bitles Club, and his presence at their meetings brought joy, laughter and happiness to all of his associate^. While Earl Warren was govenor of California he appointed Ed to serve for several years as a member of the California State Agricultural Prorate Advisory Board. In this capacity he served not only his community but his state admirably. He was a member of the Triple-X-Fraternity. Although he joined this late in life and was surrounded by men much younger than himself, he brought into this organization the spirit of brotherly love, fellowship, kindness, and understanding. And Ed is a brother Elk, a member of the Fresno Lodge. Everyone in this organization who has had an opportunity to become acquainted with Ed has marveled at his disposition and his philosophy of life. This is only a small part of his many and diversified activities. Today we gather here as his friends and loved ones to render him this last tribute, to remember him for the things that he has done, and our associations with him have enriched our lives. I sincerely feel that my knowing Ed and my association with him has enriched my life and has made me a better man. Yes, Ed Melikian, the gentleman and community leader, a man who performed big deeds with humility and humbleness, a man who was generous beyond any words that I can find that I may feel adequate to describe his generosity, a man who always had a kind work and a genial smile for everyone no matter what his position may have been in life, a man who was always at ease and felt quite at home, be it with a king or a beggar, a man who always gave worthy praise where praise was due, a man who was most tolerant and graciously minimized our shortcomings and was ever understanding and tolerant of our deficiencies, a man who through his personality endeared himself into the hearts of the infants, the youth, and the adults who devotedly called him "Uncle Ed". I am confident that Ed left with complete satisfaction in his heart, knowing that he left behind kindness, love, and friendship. I am grateful for the privilege I have had in our association and to have known him as a friend. His memory will be with us forever. Leon S. Peters Ocotber 10,1964 (This eulogy is published in fond memory of Mr. Melikian by the Board of Directors of the California Home for the Armenian Aged)
