Petrosian Wins US Chess Tourney LONE PINE - Former world champion Tigran Petrosian, a top seeded Soviet chess player has won the sixth annual Louis D. Statham International Chess Tournament in this mountain resort community. Sixteen players tied for the next two places. Petrosian captured first place and the $8,000 top prize March 12 on the final day of play. He had 5lA points, winning five of his seven games and drawing one. In second place were nine men, including the US champion Walter Brown of Berkeley; Vassily Smyslov of the Soviet Union; Miguel Quintero and Oscar Panno, both of Argentina; Anthony Miles of London, England; Kenneth Rogoff of Rochester, NY; and Gyozo Forin- tos of Hungary. Miguel Najdorf of Argentina became No. 9 in the nine-man tie late Saturday after defeating Kim Commons of Los Angeles in the final game of the tournament. All nine men had 5 points. Student Group To Award Silver Medals NEW .YORK - Ten silver medals will be awarded to high school seniors from throughout the United States in recognition of academic achievements by the Central Executive Committee of the Armenian Students' Association. The presentations will be made at the organization's annual convention banquet June 25 at the Hyatt House in Cherry Hill, NJ. "It is hoped that members of the Armenian community will make a special effort to bring this award to the attention of potential candidates," said Florence Avakian, chairman of the awards committee. Application forms may be obtained from Ms. Avakian, 201 East 30th Street, New York, NY 10016. Applications must be received by the committee by Mav 1. Walter Karabian Elected To Garfield Bank Board MONTEREY PARK-Walter Karabian has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Garfield Bank, according to an announcement by John A. Gabriel, board chairman and president of the bank. Gabriel expressed pleasure of Karabian's election saying, "His judgement and knowledge have been assets to the bank where he has served as our attorney. Now we expect to benefit even more from his expanded participation.'' Karabian, a former resident of Fresno where his parents, John and Gladys Karabian still reside, graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1956. He graduated from the University of Southern California School of Law and also earned a Master's degree from the graduate school of Public Administration. He was student body president at USC. Karabian, former Majority Floor Leader of the California Assembly and a veteran of the legislature, where he served from 1966 to 1974, is in the private practice of law as a partner in the Los Angeles firm of Karns and Karabian. In 1971, when he became Majority Floor Leader, he was the youngest man in California history to serve in that powerful position. Since his retirement from the Legislature in 1974, he has been engaged in the practice of law in California as well as in Europe and the Middle East, The Garfield Bank's home office is in Montebello with a branch in Monterey Park. The third branch will open in Huntington Park on May 5 which is the 21st anniversary of WALTER KARABIAN the establishment of the bank. Besides Gabriel, Karabian joins Art Agajanian, Jack Arakelian, Al Desoto, Ronald Gabriel and Joe Licata on the Bank's board of directors. The bank's total assets are more than $41,000,000. Wins USSR Table Tennis Crown YEREVAN - Elmira An- donian, a 20-year-old student from Yerevan, won four gold medals at the USSR individual and team table tennis championship games in Baku.
