equoia Ohip SERVING SCOUTING IN SNO AND MADERA COUNTIES AND MAL TOWNSHIP of KmQS COUNTY .ICATION # USPS 490-820 APRIL 1979 SEQUOIA COUNCIL, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA VOL. 25 NO. 4 LEON PETERS DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN OF THE YEAR ! On April 5th, in the Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel-Fresno, at 7:30 P.M., the second annual Distinguished Citizens' Award Dinner will take place. Chairman Jim Mayer, heading a committee composed of G.T. Caswell, Sr., Bill Boggs, Allen Mather, Sid Cox, Floyd Klein and John Lantsberger, have been busily working on the details of this outstanding event. The Mitchell Boys Choir, under the leadership of Bob Mitchell, which has been featured in Television, Movies and numerous recordings will provide a portion of the evenings program. Speakers featuring Lou Eaton, Rich Worrel, Dr. Walter Rohlfing, Margaret Finnegan, President Norman Baxter of Fresno State University and several others will make appropriate remarks in recognition of our honoree Mr. Leon Peters. Past President Russell Giffen, who was selected last year, will make the actual presentation to Mr. Peters. An outstanding banquet has been planned, tickets have been sold by our committee with reports of banner achievement. Representatives from all over the valley are planning to attend this gala occasion. Mr. Peters is President of the Fresno Community Hospital, Past President of the Fresno Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce, generous donor to the Council and numerous other community activities. Currently Mr. Peters is President of the Valley Foundry and Machinery, a division of Ametek Corporation. From the enthusiastic reports throughout the community it should be an outstanding evening of fun for all who attend and will result in a substantial aid to the Sequoia Council. WALT PARRISH SCOUT-O-RAMA Walt Parrish, Scout-O-Rama Chairman, announced that the following additional Scouters have joined the Scout-O-Rama Steering Committee! John Reynolds, See 'N' Do Glenn Klusner, Program & Staging Ken Kennedy, Kings River Scout-O-Rama Chairman Betty Taylor, Mono District Ticket Sales Dorothy Stuebner, Mono District Ticket Sales James Kellogg, Tomahawk District Scout-O-Rama Chairman Dale Heaton, Tomahawk District Ticket Sales Chairman Richard Ferguson, Tachi District Scout-O-Rama Chairman Shirley McNeece, Tachi District Ticket Sales Chairman Commissions to Packs & Troops selling Scout-O-Rama tickets will be larger than ever, according to Carlene Dowling, Scout- O-Rama Ticket Sales Chairperson. The Scout-O-Rama Commitee adopted the plan that has proved popular in councils throughout America. The plan makes a far greater variety of prizes available. To make this possible, each Pack and Troop will be given the opportunity to establish their own prize incentive plan. The plan is really quite simple and the full details will be spelled out in Unit Ticket Sales Mr. Mayer and his committee have devoted numerous hours and days in many weeks preceding this event, in planning each detail, including promotion and funding of various aspects. The hard work of all these Scouters on such a memorable event will make it possible to provide an outstanding Scouting Program to all of our units throughout 1979, 1980 and beyond. Packets that will be distributed on April 7th. Under the new plan units can earn as high as a 45% commission on tickets sold. Out of the unit commission each unit determines its own Boy prize incentive Program. Units will have until May 11th to turn in ticket money and receive a 40% commission. Tickets turned in between May 12th and 18th will earn a 20% commission. Units that participate by having a "Booth" in the Scout-O- Rama will earn a 5% bonus commission in addition to their regular earned ticket sales commission. Most units will allocate between 15% - 20% of a boys ticket sales toward individual prize incentives. Two catalogs will be in each Ticket Chairmans Sales Kit along with detailed suggestions. Each boy selling $6.00 worth of tickets will be awarded the Special Scout-O-Rama Patch. For each $10.00 in sales the boy will be able to enter a coupon for the Gala Treasure Chest drawings. Other prizes will be announced in the special SOR bulletin and Ticket Sales Packet. Appoint a Ticket Sales Chairman for your unit today! Have that person attend the Ticket Kick-Off Meeting for your district at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, April 7th. Ticket Kick-Off Locations: DISTRICT LOCATION Tomahawk First Congregational Church 2131 N. Shaw, Fresno Thunderbird Presbyterian Scout Hut — Schnoorand Sunset, Madera Kings River Sunmaid Raisin Plant — 1325 Bethel, Kingsburg Tachi Sunset School — Room 11, Coalinga HERO RECOGNIZED Our sincere congratulations to Cub Scout, Barton Teague of Pack 395 of Selma, sponsored by the Selma Lions Club. Young Barton has been awarded the certificate for heroism by the National Court of Honor. A real tip of the hat to such an outstanding young man who has put the skills of Cub Scouting to a lifesaving action to save one's life. The young man was recommended by our Council Advancement Committee under the leadership of Frank Dowling.
