Fresno JACL News Editor of the Month: Judie Brown 1713 Tulare St, Suite 133 • Fresno, CA 93721 -2530 May 1998 • Vol, XLVIII • No. 5 MARK YOUR CALENDAR ., » K% MAY 31, 1998 A STEP FROM THE PAST THE FUTURE A BRIDGE TO 75TH ANNIVERSARY celebration will lead off with a film showing of BEYOND THE BARBED WIRE, a Tower Theatre. 1998 Chapter Scholarship Winners The 1998 Fresno JACL Scholarship winners were announced at the CCDC and chapter scholarship luncheon held at the Casablanca Banquet and Social Hall on May 17, 1998. The winners are: Dinner at 5:30 pm at Diana's Court. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Mitchell Maki, UCLA School of Welfare. Entertainment will be provided by Larry Honda. The 75th anniversary banquet is dedica- ed to Peggy Liggett, who has contributed so much to JACL. Peggy will be in attendance. The cost of the dinner is $25.00 which includes a commemorative booklet. Bobbi Hanada is in charge of dinner reservations and information. Her telephone number is 434-1662 MAY 29, 1998 Hiroshima will perform at Fresno Convention Center. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Crime Stoppers reward fund. Tickets are on sale at the Convention Center and all BASS outlets. For further details, call Detective Brad Stevens, Crime Stoppers Coordinator at 498-4937. NEWSLETTER June Editor - Frank Hashimoto Due date - June 18 Assembly - June 25 4 JAPANESE ROOTS - JUST WHO ARE THE JAPANESE WHERE DID THEY COME FROM AND WHEN Read the June 1998 issue of Discover magazine. The article states that the answers are not easy to come by...though not impossible. The real problem is that the Japanese may not want to know. JON NAKAMATSU This month's issue of Reader's Digest features an article of JOn Nakamatsu written by his music teacher. It is very interesting article. David Akina from Hoover High School, the son of George and Jenny Akina was awarded the Masao and Hana Kimura Scholarship. David plans to attend Fresno Pacific University with a double major in Mathematics Education and Christian Ministries. Keith Suda-Cederquist from Clovis West High School, the son of Gerald Cederquist and Kathleen Suda was awarded the Miyahara/ Kusakai Memorial Scholarship. A National Merit Scholar Finalist, Keith plans to eventually become an engineer. Adrienne Uyeda from San Joaquin Memorial High School, the daughter of Steven and Cecilia Uyeda was awarded the Dr. Henry Kazato Memorial Scholarship. Considering a number of different universities currently, Adrienne hopes to eventually attain her longtime goal of becoming a pharmacist. Lacey Hanada currently attending the University of California, Berkeley, the daughter of Steve and Bobbi Hanada was awarded the Fred and Setsu fiimsuna Scholarship. In her first year at Cal, Lacey is undecided on future plans but hopes to eventually help people in ways they cannot help themselves. Lynne Yokota currently attending Calif State University, Fresno, the daughter of Ken and Arline Yokota was awarded the Dr. Thomas T. Yatabe Memorial Scholarship. In her junior year of college, Lynne plans to become a school teacher concentrating in elementary education.
