President's Message: by Bill Yoshimoto "V^ ' ^V l/i$y/t ^ f ^"> / I Reflections Of An Outgoing President Recently I had the honor of representing our chapter at the National Convention in Honolulu, The time was busy and very tiring for me, yet a time I will remember always. Seeing the inner workings of JACL, the formulation of policy, the setting of direction and the election of our national leadership was an enlightening experience. In the midst of all the activity, we took time to hold a memorial service at the Punchbowl National War Cemetary to honor those who gave their lives as members of the 442nd/100th/MIS during World War II. This was the event that remains most significant in my convention experience. The early morning was brilliant and beautiful. A sense of calm and reverence enveloped all of us. The ceremony was simple but the meaning clear. Much of where we are today as Japanese Americans, our achievements, our economic success, our pride, stems from the sacrifice of those who served in the 442nd/100th/MIS in the face of unjust incarceration. Truly, this was America's finest hour. As I wiped the tears, I vowed to never forget the sacrifice and to teach my children and if I am fortunate, to Teachmy children1s children. In humility I see that where I am in society today is in large part built on the^foundation of" The 442nd/100th/MIS. Thank you, Dad. " ********** A very capable man was elected to serve as president for the next biennium. Frank Sato is a man of vision, dedication and sensitivity. I expect great strides under his leadership. He is deserving and will need all of our support. If we would like to meet him, he told me he would be glad to come visit our chapter, ********** As the title to this President's Message indicates, I am the outgoing president. Our next meeting will be the time to elect new officers for the next two years. The new officers will be installed at the CCDC convention in early November. My last official meeting will be in October. Hopefully the 40 days between election and convention will serve as a time of transition, Please attend the next meeting to elect new members. ********** Our next meeting will be a ~r—\ii 1 ffln?ting. The Ozawas in Visalia have graciously opened up "tneir home for the 29th of_ spp-hfiph^r for a Bar-B-Que steak dinner meeting. BesitJestne"*- elections we will be having a program on retirement featuring an excellent videotape production of the Aging and Retirement section of JACL entitled, "A Tale of Nisei Retirement.11 I previewed the film at the national convention. It is an excellent video. I urge all of our membership to see it.
