The crew had withdrawn to sEel- ter, but P r.i va t e F 1 r s t Class Muranaga seeing that the 88mm gun was causing nume r o u s c a s ua 11 i e s, vo 1 un- tarily elected to man the mortar himself. Ee acted with full awareness of the vulnerbillty of his position and the probably consequences to himself. The enemy gunners., becoming a- ware of him when"his third round landed close to and in' front of the G8mm, trained their gun directly on his position. Before he could 'get his fourth round away, they scored a direct Hit on his position, killing Him instantly. His devotion to duty and heroic sacrifice lived up to the highest tradition for courage of the Armed Forces- of the United States, H i s close fire caused the enemy to withdraw his gun, thus snaring the lives of many of Private First Class Muranaga1 s comrades.
