The highlight of this month long celebration will be an evening with film maker KENJI YAMAMOTO, and the screening of his much acclaimed full length movie - THOUSAND PIECES OF GOLD - shown at ART THEATERS in the Bay Area at $7.00 per person admission fee. This will be the last public showing of the film so be sure to reserve the evening of May 9th on your calendar... and get to the theater early because the theater capacity is only 250. Diablo Unified School District to raise the sensitivities and awareness of the School Board, Administration, Faculty and Staff towards Asian Pacific American co-workers, and an increasing enrollment of APA students... by showing films, holding cultural events, having prominent Asian speakers, etc. to educate the educators, and to "open" their eyes and minds to Eastern culture and traditions, and to show that Asian Pacific Americans can achieve and become useful members of the community, given the opportunity. This handful of activists aptly called themselves "Asian American Together of Mt. Diablo", and worked within the framework of the District Human Relations Program. This was back in 1989. APA Heritage Week has now grown into a month long celebration, with the House of Representatives passing a Resolution in 1991 proclaiming the month of MAY Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. According to Jack Nakashima, Asian Pacific Americans constitute 9.4 percent of students registered in the Mt. Diablo School District, and Asian Americans Together is looking for the day when Administrator/Faculty/Staff retio begins to closely reflect the 9.4 percent student enrollment. Sad to report, this ratio stands at 2.2 percent today. Jack Nakashima has been the "driver and shaker" behind this movement for better representation, "parity" as Jack calls it, for Asian Pacific Americans in the school district. TRULY AMAZING WHAT ONE PERSON WITH DETERMINATION AND VISION CAN ACCOMPLISH! Jack's program to raise the sensitivity of the school district has grown into a community event, with AAT of Mt. Diablo, Asian Pacific Faculty & Staff of DVC, Asian Students Union of DVC, Associated Students of DVC and the Diablo Valley JACL co-sponsoring the screening of - THOUSAND PIECES OF GOLD -. - 6 -
