Presentation Ceremony, ORA Itinerary, and Related Redress Activities News releases have been issued by the Office of Redress Administration, the wire services have covered current news regarding redress payments, and the Pacific Citizen will be including articles on redress developments. However, to assure that our membership is being kept advised of what is happening in the different areas on redress, the following is a brief update: ORA Presentation - Washington, D.C. - Oct. 9, 1990 October 9 has been confirmed as the date when the letters of apology from the U.S. Government will be presented by John Dunne, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights of the Dept. of Justice, to six of the oldest recipients ranging in age from 101 to 107, who can travel to the nation's capital. The letters of apology signed by the President will be enclosed in a handsome blue velvet binder accompanied by the $20,000 check. In a ceremony at 10:00 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Department of Justice building, which holds 250 persons, congressional members, members of JACL-LEC and JACL and others who have been key supporters of the redress effort, and media representatives have been invited to witness this historic event. National network television coverage is anticipated. There will be a celebration reception immediately following the ceremony. Local Presentation Ceremonies in Nine Cities Barring any budgetary restrictions that may occur, it is anticipated that following the Washington, D.C. ceremony, ORA Administrator Bob Bratt will be flying to Chicago, Los Angeles, Fresno, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, Seattle, and Honolulu to present the letter of apology and checks to the oldest recipients in those cities. A stop will be made in Fhoenix after Chicago to present a check to one of the two 107-year old survivors of the internment. Key volunteers who assisted in the redress program and in the work of the Office of Redress Administration are also being recognized by the agency in each of the major cities. JACLers and other community group volunteers in each of the cities have been requested to set up a program for a community event and media coverage. Press kits are expected to be issued from the ORA for local distribution.
