Nikkei Heritage»Spring 1998 Volume X, Number 2* Spring 1998 Japanese Americans and the Presidio During World War II, the Presidio of San Francisco was headquarters for the Western Defense Command, headed by Lt. Gen. John L. DeWitt. Decisions made there affected every Japanese American living on the West Coast. Today, the Presidio is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the most heavily used park in the National Park System, with twice the combined visitorship of Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone. There are many opportunities to educate millions of local, national, and international visitors on the Presidio's role in Japanese American history. As a Park Partner, the National Japanese American Historical Society has a formalized agreement with the National Park Service to jointly interpret Japanese American history at the Presidio. In this issue we are pleased to present several articles featuring the Presidio. National Park Service Historian Stephen A. Haller writes about the Presidio's role in Japanese American history, as well as about the Park Partnership. "Information Suppressed" is Coram Nobis attorney Don Tamaki's sobering account of the government conspiracy to justify the "military necessity" of internment. "Redemption of Honor: From cEnemy Alien' to Chief of Security" traces the story of two Niseis who served in U.S. Army Intelligence while their families were incarcerated in wartime detention camps. They demonstrated their loyalty and effectiveness through decades of military service, culminating in their consecutive appointments as Chiefs of Security at the very military headquarters that had implemented E.O. 9066. In another instance of coming full circle from vilification to vindication, Fred Korematsu, who was incarcerated in the Presidio in 1942 for defying the eviction order, will be honored at the 2nd annual NJAHS /NPS Park Partner ceremony. The struggle for truth and justice continues. Kenji Taguma of the Nichi Bei Times contributes two articles on Japanese American railroad workers fired during World War II. In the final months of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, the resolution of the railroad and mine workers' cases, and those of the Japanese Peruvians, continues to unfold. - Editorial Committee NJAHS Board of Directors Thomos T.
